Addressing Injustice Beyond Justice
Toward Fluid Intersectional Strategies in Education
Abstract
This article explores the progression of anti-oppressive efforts from “not addressing issues of privilege/ marginalization” approaches in education, to Single-Issue and Additive approaches, to Fixed Intersectional approaches. In doing so, it is noted that there are still significant challenges to these fixed intersectional approaches, one of which is “fading intersectional dominance.” To address these challenges, this article further develops Fluid Intersectional approaches by reviewing five different social justice education strategies. The result is more adaptive, nuanced, and complex ways of helping students to develop their intersectional capacities for critical analyses and social action.
