Change and Become Like Children
Learning from Trans and Non-binary Youth in Matthew 18:1-6
Abstract
Abstract: This essay explores Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 18:1-6 that to enter the kin-dom of God disciples must “change and become like children.” Using childist and queer interpretations, it places Jesus’ teaching in conversation with contemporary debates about protecting children, especially debates about gender-affirming care for transgender and non-binary youth and young adults. This essay contends that ushering in the kin-dom of God involves listening to and learning from children, particularly those most marginalized by society. It also requires commitment to empowering youth to grow into their fullest expression of the imago dei through providing access to care and resources, while removing barriers that cause them to stumble in their relationship with God.
