The True Meaning of Evangelical
Lessons from Winston Persaud
Abstract
This article argues for the continuing use of the word evangelical, even in light of the negative connotations it has for many. The argument is based on the teaching, learning and embodiment of the true meaning of evangelical that was at the heart of the pastoral teaching ministry of the Rev. Dr. Winston Persaud, in his long career at Wartburg Seminary. For Professor Persaud, being evangelical encompassed the following four characteristics: trusting in the transformative power of the Holy Spirit; actively and regularly praying for others by name; being open-minded and openhearted with those with different beliefs; and living intentionally and explicitly in the name of Jesus.
