Abstract

This article draws on the social sciences to frame Christian nationalism. As socio-religious movements, proponents use symbols, stories of origin, rites, and traditions such that Christian nationalist movements (there are several) are about more than religion. As one cultural element among many, religion interacts with other cultural components such that reading Christian nationalism as purely political, ideological, or religious misses their complexities. Following an introduction to an anthropological approach, this article introduces Christian nationalism as cultural phenomena, the context in which it has emerged, some details about current manifestations, and concluding with some thoughts about engagement.
